L.A. Opera adds ‘Traviata’ performance with Placido Domingo

Plácido Domingo is a surefire audience draw for Los Angeles Opera whether he’s singing on stage or conducting in the orchestra pit. On Thursday, the company said it is adding an additional performance of its upcoming revival staging of “La Traviata,” which stars Domingo and soprano Nino Machaidze, because of “exceptional ticket demand.”

“La Traviata,” which is L.A. Opera’s season opener, was scheduled to run from Sept. 13 to 28 with six performances. A seventh performance has now been added for Friday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m.

Music director James Conlon is conducting the production, which is a revival of the L.A. Opera staging by Marta Domingo that was seen in the 2005-06 season and that has been brought back a number of times.

Domingo will sing the baritone role of Giorgio Germont, while Machaidze will play Violetta. The production sets Verdi’s opera in the flamboyant 1920s.

In October, Domingo is scheduled to appear in a production of Verdi’s “I Due Foscari” in London. The staging is a co-production with L.A. Opera (and some other companies) that was seen at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in 2012.
