Domingo Extends Contract as General Director of Los Angeles Opera

Plácido Domingo has extended his contact as the general director of the Los Angeles Opera through the 2018-19 season, the company announced Friday.

“It is enormously gratifying to have been part of this company from its earliest years, but I am even more excited about what we can achieve as we continue to build an opera company for the 21st century,” Mr. Domingo said in a statement.

Mr. Domingo first appeared in Los Angeles in 1967 while on a New York City Opera tour. He sang the title role in the Los Angeles Opera’s inaugural production of Verdi’s “Otello” in 1986, was appointed the company’s artistic director in 2001 and became its general director in 2003.

Christopher Koelsch, the company’s president and chief executive, had his contract extended through June 2018, the board announced.

Marc Stern, the chairman of the company’s board of directors, said in the statement that he was continually astounded by Mr. Domingo’s “inspired artistic vision, his boundless energy, and his passionate advocacy for music, the arts and education.”

The company just finished playing host to the 2014 Operalia singing competition, which Mr. Domingo founded in 1993, and is set to open its season on Sept. 13 with Verdi’s “La Traviata,” with Mr. Domingo singing the baritone role of Giorgio Germont.
