The Bayerische Staatsoper has announced its 2017-18 season, which will feature a whopping six new productions and a total of 41 operas.

The season opens in Japan in September with the “Così fan tutte” officially kicking things off in Munich at the end of the month.

The New Productions

The first new production of the year will be Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” directed by Christof Loy. That run begins in October and is followed by a new staging of Puccini’s “Il Trittico” in December. Lotte de Beer directs with such stars as Yonghoon Lee, Eva-Maria Westbroek, Ermonela Jaho and Ambrosio Maestri starring.

In March, Antú Romero Nunes directs a new version of Verdi’s “Les Vêpres Siciliennes” with a star-studded cast that includes Carmen Giannattasio, Bryan Hymel, and Erwin Schrott.

Janácek’s “From the House of the Dead” will be directed by Frank Castorf in May with Peter Rose and Bo Skovhus leading the cast. A new production of “Parsifal” opens in June with René Pape, Jonas Kaufmann and Nina Stemme headlining the cast. Pierre Audi directs the new production while Kirill Petrenko conducts.

The final new production of the season is Joseph Haydn’s rarely performed “Orlando Paladino.” Axel Ranisch directs while Sofia Fomina stars alongside David Portillo and Tara Erraught. That production opens in July.

A Ring Cycle

Andreas Kriegenburg’s production of Wagner’s “Ring” makes a return with Wolfgang Koch as Wotan, Ekaterina Gubanova as Fricka, Anja Kampe as Sieglinde, Nina Stemme as Brünhilde and Stefan Winke as Siegfried. Jonas Kaufmann and Simon O’Neill split the role of Siegmund. There is a total of three cycles with two in January and one in July.

The Revivals

There is a total of 31 revivals including four Donizetti operas, two by Mozart, three by Puccini, four by Rossini, four by Richard Strauss and five by Verdi. There will also be revivals of “Carmen,” “Mefistofele,” “Andrea Chénier,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “Die Fledermaus,” “ Der Fliegende Holländer” and “La Calisto.”
