The Bayerische Staatsoper has announced its 2018-19 season and many of today’s greatest stars will be performing in the house.

However, there are few singers that will have banner years with the company and will likely make headlines throughout the year. Here five stars OperaWire believes you cannot miss next season.

Jonas Kaufmann

For Kaufmann fans who have missed him in the states and other theaters, this season the Bayerische Staatsoper will showcase him in three productions. First up, he will sing his second production of “Otello” in a new production alongside frequent onstage partner Anja Harteros and Gerald Finley. When he first sang the role back in 2017, OperaWire hailed it as a historic moment. Then he will take on Florestan alongside Anja Kampe in “Fidelio” before making his final appearance of the season during the Munich Opera Festival in “Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg.”

Anja Kampe

The German soprano will also make headlines in numerous productions. She will open up a new production of Puccini’s “La Faniculla de West,” stepping out of the German repertoire for which she has gained great acclaim. She will also join Kaufmann in “Fidelio” and will also perform Senta in “Der Fliegende Holländer,” a role for which has gained acclaim for over the years.

Charles Castronovo

The American tenor will have a banner year at the Bayerische Staatsoper, singing a role debut in “Alceste” and stepping into his first Gluck opera. The tenor is recognized for his work in Italian and French works and Gluck should be interesting to hear him sing. He will also step into the title role of “Roberto Devereux,” a role which he gained acclaim for last season.

Anja Harteros

Anja Harteros may not be making role debuts this season but she will be showcased in four productions throughout the Munich season making up most of her season and being one of the few houses to showcase her talents. She will first join Jonas Kaufmann in a new production of “Otello.” Her Desdemona has traveled the world and has gained incredible reviews. She will also sing “Tosca” which OperaWire hailed out of Zurich and she will also sing Maddalena in “Andrea Chénier” as well as the title role in Strauss’ “Arabella.”

Marlis Petersen

It’s hard not be excited for Petersen as she is one of the greatest singing actresses of our time and her career has taken numerous twists and turns. Next season she will be singing her most daunting role to date in Strauss’ “Salome.” The lyric soprano will make her role debut in what many call one of the most difficult soprano roles in the repertoire.
