Anna Netrebko, Cecilia Bartoli & Placido Domingo Headline 2019 Salzburg Festival

The Salzburg Festival has announced it 2019 season with five new productions, two revivals, and two concert operas. Here is a look at what audiences can expect this season.

Productions 

The 2019 Salzburg Festival opens with Mozart’s “Idomeneo.” Teodor Currentzis and Peter Sellars team up again after “La Clemenza di Tito” with a cast that includes Russell Thomas (Idomeneo), Paula Murrihy (Idamante), Ying Fang (Ilia), Nicole Chevalier (Elettra), and Jonathan Lemalu (Nettuno / La voce).

Premiere Date: July 27, 2019

Sonya Yoncheva takes on the title role in Cherubini’s “Médée.” Simon Stone directs a new production with a cast that also includes Pavel Černoch, Vitalij Kowaljow, Rosa Feola, and Alisa Kolosova. Thomas Hengelbrock conducts the Wiener Philharmoniker and Wiener Staatsoper chorus.

Premiere Date: July 30, 2019

Enescu’s rarely performed “Œdipe” will get a new production by Achim Freyer. Ingo Metzmacher conducts the Wiener Philharmoniker with Christopher Maltman in the title role. John Tomlinson (Tirésias), Brian Mulligan (Créon), Vincent Ordonneau (Le Berger), David Steffens (Le Grand Prêtre), Gordon Bintner (Phorbas), Tilmann Rönnebeck (Le Veilleur), Boris Pinkhasovich (Thésée), Michael Colvin (Laïos), Anaïk Morel (Jocaste), Clémentine Margaine (La Sphinge), Chiara Skerath (Antigone) and Anna Maria Dur (Mérope) rounding out the cast.

Premiere Date: August 11, 2019

Damiano Michieletto directs Handel’s “Alcina” with Cecilia Bartoli, Sandrine Piau, Kristina Hammarström, Christoph Strehl, Alastair Miles, and Philippe Jaroussky. Gianluca Capuano conducts Les Musiciens du Prince.

Premiere Date: August 8, 2019

Offenbach’s “Orphée aux enfers is set to star Kathryn Lewek, Joel Prieto, Marcel Beekman, Martin Winkler, Max Hopp, Anne Sofie von Otter, Peter Renz, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, Frances Pappas, Lea Desandre, and Nadine Weissmann. Enrique Mazzola conducts the new production by Barrie Kosky.

Premiere Date: August 14, 2019

Luca Salsi sings the title role of “Simon Boccanegra” with  René Pape as Fiesco, Marina Rebeka as Amelia, and Charles Castronovo as Adorno. Valery Gergiev conducts the new production by Andreas Kriegenburg.

Premiere Date: August 15, 2019

The Salzburg Festival revives 2018’s production of “Salome” by Romeo Castellucci. Asmik Grigorian reprises her acclaimed turn with John Daszak, Anna
Maria Chiuri, and Gábor Bretz rounding our the cast. The Wiener Philharmoniker is conducted under Franz Welser-Möst.

Concert Opera

Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov headline “Adriana Lecouvreur” with Antia Rachvelishvili as the Princess de Bouillon. Marco Armiliato conducts the performances which also star Nicola Alaimo, Mika Kares, and Andrea Giovannini.

Performance Dates: July 31- August 3, 2019

Placido Domingo stars in Verdi’s “Luisa Miller”  alongside Nino Machaidze in the title role. Piotr Beczala stars as Rodolfo with  Roberto Tagliavini, Teresa Iervolino, and John Relyea rounding out the cast. James Conlon conducts.
