Music-lovers desperate to catch two of opera’s greatest stars perform in a rare London run face having to part with up to £7,000 for a pair of tickets.

Tickets for the Royal Opera House’s production of Verdi’s La Forza Del Destino — starring Jonas Kaufmann and Anna Netrebko — are being advertised with huge resale prices on the secondary ticketing website Viagogo.

Two tickets in the stalls with a face value of £570 are being offered for £6,869. Only 100 tickets, less than 10 per cent of the total allocation, went on general sale.

The rest were snapped up by ROH members who pay up to £2,000 a year for early-bird access.

Chief executive Alex Beard called the prices “absolutely outrageous” and said it was “highly unlikely” members were selling on tickets.

He warned those with such tickets risked being turned away.

A representative of Viagogo said: “All tickets on viagogo are valid and it is perfectly legal to resell a ticket or give it to someone else if you want to. viagogo does not set ticket prices, sellers set their own prices, which may be above or below the original face value.

"The reality is that any tickets listed at silly prices rarely if ever sell.”
