The Hamburg State Opera has announced its 2019-20 season featuring six new productions and a number of revivals. There is also a mix of contemporary repertoire with classic and repertory staples.

Here is a look at what to expect.

New Productions 

Elbenita Kajtazi, Renate Spingler, Hellen Kwon, Peter Galliard, Stefan Sevenich, Iwan Iwanowitsch, and Julian Arsenault star in a new production of Shostakovich’s “The Nose.” Kent Nagano conducts the new production by Karin Beier.

Performance Dates: Sept. 7-Sept. 28, 2019 

Jan Bosse directs a new production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” with Andrè Schuen in the title role, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller as Donna Anna, Dovlet Nurgeldiyev as Don Ottavio, Alexander Tsymbalyuk as Il Commendatore, Federica Lombardi as Donna Elvira, Kyle Ketelsen as Leporello, Alexander Roslavets as Masetto, and Anna Lucia Richter as Zerlina. Adam Fischer conducts.

Ambrogio Maestri brings his acclaimed interpretation of Verdi’s “Falstaff” with Calixto Bieto directing. Axel Kober conducts the production with Markus Brück and Christopher Maltman sharing the role of Ford, Maija Kovalevska as Alice Ford, Oleksiy Palchykov and Dovlet Nurgeldiyev alternating as Fenton, Elbenita Kajtazi as Nanetta, and Nadezhda Karyazina as Mrs. Quickly.

Marina Rebeka stars in a new production of Bellin’s “Norma” by Yona Kim. Marcelo Puente stars as Pollione and Diana Haller as Adalgisa. Paolo Carignani conducts.

Elena Pankratova stars in the title role of Strauss’ “Elektra” with Violeta Urmana as Klytämnestra, Jennifer Holloway as Chrysothemis, Jürgen Sacher as Aegisth, and Lauri Vasar as Orest. Dmitri Tcherniakov directs the new production with Kent Nagano conducting.

Camila Nylund takes on the title role in Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” with Stephen Gould as Bacchus and Anaïk Morel as the composer. Kent Nagano conducts.

Paolo Carignani conducts Verdi’s “Nabucco” with Dimitri Platanias in the title role, Liudmyla Monastyrska as Abigaille and Tigran Martirossian as Zaccaria. Dovlet Nurgeldiyev and Nadezhda Karyazina round out the cast.

Janáček’s “Katja Kabanova” gets a revival with Johannes Harneit conducting a cast that includes Oliver Zwarg, Edgaras Montvidas, Hanna Schwarz, Jürgen Sacher, Olesya Golovneva, and Oleksiy Palchykov.

Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel” returns in time for the holiday season with Jana Kurucová and Nadezhda Karyazina sharing the role of Hansel and Elbenita Kajtazi and Katerina Tretyakova alternating as Gretel. Renate Spingler and Peter Galliard round out the cast as the Witch with Nicolas André conducting.

Angel Blue and Celine Byrne bring their acclaimed interpretations of Mimì to Puccini’s “La Bohème.” They are joined by tenors Andeka Gorrotxategi and Stephen Costello’s Rodolfo and Katharina Konradi’s Musetta. Carlo Montanaro and Pier Giorgio Morandi alternate at the pit.
