Plácido Domingo, Marina Rebeka & Rolando Villazón Highlight Hamburg State Opera’s 2019-20 Season

The Hamburg State Opera has announced its 2019-20 season featuring six new productions and a number of revivals. There is also a mix of contemporary repertoire with classic and repertory staples.

Here is a look at what to expect.

New Productions 

Elbenita Kajtazi, Renate Spingler, Hellen Kwon, Peter Galliard, Stefan Sevenich, Iwan Iwanowitsch, and Julian Arsenault star in a new production of Shostakovich’s “The Nose.” Kent Nagano conducts the new production by Karin Beier.

Performance Dates: Sept. 7-Sept. 28, 2019 

Jan Bosse directs a new production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” with Andrè Schuen in the title role, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller as Donna Anna, Dovlet Nurgeldiyev as Don Ottavio, Alexander Tsymbalyuk as Il Commendatore, Federica Lombardi as Donna Elvira, Kyle Ketelsen as Leporello, Alexander Roslavets as Masetto, and Anna Lucia Richter as Zerlina. Adam Fischer conducts.

Performance Dates: Oct. 20-Nov. 9, 2019

Ambrogio Maestri brings his acclaimed interpretation of Verdi’s “Falstaff” with Calixto Bieto directing. Axel Kober conducts the production with Markus Brück and Christopher Maltman sharing the role of Ford, Maija Kovalevska as Alice Ford, Oleksiy Palchykov and Dovlet Nurgeldiyev alternating as Fenton, Elbenita Kajtazi as Nanetta, and Nadezhda Karyazina as Mrs. Quickly.

Performance Dates: Jan. 19-Feb 8, 2020 & March 25-28, 2020

Marina Rebeka stars in a new production of Bellin’s “Norma” by Yona Kim. Marcelo Puente stars as Pollione and Diana Haller as Adalgisa. Paolo Carignani conducts.

Performance Dates: March 8-24, 2020

Elena Pankratova stars in the title role of Strauss’ “Elektra” with Violeta Urmana as Klytämnestra, Jennifer Holloway as Chrysothemis, Jürgen Sacher as Aegisth, and Lauri Vasar as Orest. Dmitri Tcherniakov directs the new production with Kent Nagano conducting.

Performance Dates: April 26-May 12, 2020

Kent Nagano conducts Messiaen’s “Saint François d’Assise” with Johannes Martin Kränzle, Anna Prohaska, and Sean Panikkar.

Performance Dates: May 16-23, 2020

Revivals 

Camila Nylund takes on the title role in Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” with Stephen Gould as Bacchus and Anaïk Morel as the composer. Kent Nagano conducts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 14-29, 2019

Paolo Carignani conducts Verdi’s “Nabucco” with Dimitri Platanias in the title role, Liudmyla Monastyrska as Abigaille and Tigran Martirossian as Zaccaria. Dovlet Nurgeldiyev and Nadezhda Karyazina round out the cast.

Performance Dates: Sept. 19-Oct. 5, 2019 

Janáček’s “Katja Kabanova” gets a revival with Johannes Harneit conducting a cast that includes Oliver Zwarg, Edgaras Montvidas, Hanna Schwarz, Jürgen Sacher, Olesya Golovneva, and Oleksiy Palchykov.

Performance Dates: Sept. 24-Oct. 4, 2019

Marco Berti, Marco Vratogna and Guanqun Yu star in Verdi’s “Otello” with Paolo Carignani conducting. José Cura, Krassimira Stoyanova, and Andrzej Dobber star in the Italian week festival.

Performance Dates: Oct. 3-15, 2019 & March 12-15, 2020 

Maria Bengtsson, Stephanie Lauricella, Alexey Bogdanchikov, Oleksiy Palchykov, Katharina Konradi, and Levente Páll star in Mozart’s “Così fan tutte.” Christopher Ward conducts.

Performance Dates: Oct. 22-Nov. 2, 2019

Riccardo Minasi conducts Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” with a cast that includes Christoph Pohl, Christiane Karg, Elbenita Kajtazi, Wilhelm Schwinghammer, and Jana Kurucová.

Performance Dates: Nov. 1-12, 2019

Rolando Villazón and Anna Prohaska star in Debussy’s “Pelléas et Mélisande” with Simon Keenlyside and Tigran Martirossian rounding the cast. Kent Nagano conducts Willy Decker’s production.

Performance Dates: Nov. 15-23, 2019

Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel” returns in time for the holiday season with Jana Kurucová and Nadezhda Karyazina sharing the role of Hansel and Elbenita Kajtazi and Katerina Tretyakova alternating as Gretel. Renate Spingler and Peter Galliard round out the cast as the Witch with Nicolas André conducting.

Performance Dates: Nov. 21-Dec. 4, 2019

Angel Blue and Celine Byrne bring their acclaimed interpretations of Mimì to Puccini’s “La Bohème.” They are joined by tenors Andeka Gorrotxategi and Stephen Costello’s Rodolfo and Katharina Konradi’s Musetta. Carlo Montanaro and Pier Giorgio Morandi alternate at the pit.

Klaus Florian Vogt and Gun-Brit Barkmin star in Korngold’s “Die Tote Städt.” Alexey Bogdanchikov and Jana Kurucová round out the cast with Christoph Gedschold.

Performance Dates: Dec. 6-15, 2019

Annalisa Stroppa takes on the title role in Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” with Xabier Anduaga, Kartal Karagedik, Maurizio Muraro and Torben Jürgens. Matteo Beltrami conducts the witty score.

Performance Dates: Dec. 8-31, 2019

Klaus Florian Vogt brings his signature “Lohengrin” interpretation to the house. He is joined by Christof Fischesser, Simone Schneider, Wolfgang Koch, Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, and Andrzej Dobber with Kent Nagano conducting.

Performance Dates: Dec. 22, 2019-Jan. 3, 2020 

Andriana Chuchman and Dmitry Korchak star in John Neumeier’s production of Glucks’ “Orphée et Eurydice,” a production they created last season. Alessandro De Marchi conducts Gluck’s masterpiece.

Barbara Hannigan takes on the title role in Berg’s “Lulu” with Anne Sofie Von Otter, Sergei Leiferkus, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Charles Workman, and  Martin Pawlowsky. Kent Nagano conducts.

Verdi’s “La Traviata” returns to the Hamburg stage with Christina Poulitsi, Liparit Avetisyan, and Markus Brück. Giampaolo Bisanti conducts.

Liang Li, Oleksiy Palchykov, Katharina Konradi, Antonina Vesenina, and Zak Kariithi lead the ensemble cast in Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte.” Volker Krafft conducts.

Daniele Callegari conducts Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” with Elena Guseva as Cio-Cio San, Stefano la Colla as Pinkerton, Nadezhda Karyazina as Suzuki, and Alexey Bogdanchikov as Sharpless.

Andrzej Dobber, Allison Oakes, Michael Schade, and Wilhelm Schwinghammer Star in Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Holländer.” Christof Prick conducts.

Hulkar Sabirova, Maite Beaumont, Katarina Bradić Julia Lezhneva, and Narea Son star in Handel’s “Alcina” with Christopher Moulds conducting.

Calixto Bieto’s production of Verdi’s “Requiem” returns with Maria Bengtsson, Katja Pieweck, Dmytro Popov, and Tareq Nazmi in the solo roles. Roberto Rizzi Brignoli conducts.

Kristine Opolais takes the title role in Puccini’s “Tosca” with Marcelo Álvarez and Ambrogio Maestri. Ivan Repusic Conducts Robert Carsen’s production.

Plácido Domingo brings his acclaimed interpretation of Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra” to the Hamburg stage for the first time during Italian Opera week. He is joined by Evgenia Muraveva, Ramón Vargas, Kwangchul Youn, and Alexander Vinogradov. Stefano Ranzani conducts.

Performance Dates: March 22 & 26, 2020

Anaïk Morel sings the title role in Bizet’s “Carmen” with Marcelo Puente alternating the role of Don José with Wookyung Kim, Alexey Markov as Escamillo, and Sabina Bisholt and Hellen Kwon sharing the role of Micaëla.

Performance Dates: April 1 & 8 & June 4-10, 2020

Wagner’s “Parsifal” returns to the repertoire with Kent Nagano in the pit, Christopher Ventris appears in the title role and Claudia Mahnke will interpret Kundry. Andrzej Dobber, Kwangchul Youn, and Werner Van Mechelen round out the cast.

Performance Dates: April 12-25, 2020

Kent Nagano conducts Beethoven’s “Fidelio” with Daniel Behle and Elisabeth Teige in the leading roles. Falk Struckmann, Andrzej Dobber, Kartal Karagedik, and Elbenita Kajtazi round out the cast.

Rosa Feola headlines Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore” with Oleksiy Palchykov, Zak Kariithi, and Tigran Martirossian. Carlo Rizzari conducts.

Performance Dates: May 16-June 1, 2020

Christoph Gedschold conducts Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades” with Najmiddin Mavlyanov as Herman and Elena Guseva as Lisa. Pavel Yankovsky, Alexey Bogdanchikov, and Ida Aldrian round out the cast.

Performance Dates: May 22-June 5, 2020

Atalla Ayan, Andrzej Dobber, and Hila Fahima headline Verdi’s “Rigoletto” with Francesco Lanzillotta conducting. Marco Spotti and Jana Kurucová round out the cast as Sparafucile and Maddalena.

Performance Dates: June 6-11, 2020

Opera Stabile 

Shostakovich’s “Moskau, Tscherjomuschki” returns with Rupert Burleigh conducting a production by Vera Nemirova. Hiroshi Amako, Ruzana Grigorian, Dongwon Kang, and Na’ama Shulman star.

Performance Dates: Sept. 6-11, 2019

Harneit’s “Ichundlch” will be directed by Christian von Treskow and conducted by Johannes Harneit. Gabriele Rossmanith and Daniel Kluge take on the lead roles.

Performance Dates: Nov. 6-12, 2019

Clara Weyde directs Isabelle Aboulker’s  “Bella und Blaubart,” a kinderoper.

Performance Dates: Feb. 9-23, 2020

Narea Son, Ida Aldrian, and Peter Galliard star in Abraham’s “Märchen im Grand-Hotel” with Georgiy Dubko conducting and Sascha-Alexander Todtner directing.

Vladislav Parapanov’s directs Telemann’s “Die Kuh – doch halt, Nein, nein!” with Johannes Gontarski conducting.
