By David Salazar

Tenor Roberto Alagna is set to appear on the stage of the Royal Opera House for the 100th time in his career when he appears in the title role of “Andrea Chénier.” The opening night performance is set for May 20, 2019.

Alagna made his debut with the company back in 1992 as Rodolfo in Puccini’s “La Bohème” and has been a continued presence with the company for the ensuing 27 years. Among the operas he has conquered on the British stage are “L’Elisir d’Amore,” “Tosca,” “Carmen,” “Il Trovatore,” “Turandot,” and “Aida.”

Alagna has previously appeared in the role of the French poet and revolutionary with a performance alongside the Opera Orchestra of New York back in 2013. He was recently scheduled to perform in “Carmen” at the Opéra National de Paris but had to withdraw due to severe bronchitis.

The cast for the Giordano opera will include Sondra Radvanovsky as Maddalena, Dmitri Platanias as Gérard, Christine Rice as Bersi, and Rosalind Plowright as the Countess di Coigny. Daniel Oren will conduct the famed Italian score.

There will be subsequent performances of “Andrea Chénier” on May 24, 28, 31, and June 3, 6, and 9.
