Opéra de Lyon Finds New Artistic Director

Jochen Breiholz, the Theater an der Wien’s Director of Artistic Administration and Casting, is set to take the position of Artistic Director at the Opéra de Lyon.

Breiholz, who worked  has been with the Vienna theater since April 2016, will takeover the Lyon position in February 2021.

The Opéra de Lyon’s General Director Serge Dorny said in a press statement, “I have been following the exceptional work of Jochen Breiholz ​​for many years, first in Riga, then in Antwerp and of course at the Theater an der Wien. Together with the new general director Richard Brunel, I am very pleased that we were able to get Jochen Breiholz ​​as opera director for the Opéra de Lyon. We warmly welcome him!”

Meanwhile General Director of the Theater an der Wien Roland Geyer said, “I am very pleased that Jochen Breiholz, as opera director at the renowned Opéra de Lyon, will be able to take the next step in his career from 2021. At the same time, of course, I regret losing him as a committed and competent partner in the organization and coordination as well as in accompanying the artistic processes of our internationally successful opera house.”

Breiholz has worked for Opera News, Opera Now, and Opernwelt as well as the Latvian National Opera and Vlaamse Opera.
