The Aldeburgh Festival is set to present a 2013 production of Britten’s “Peter Grimes” on BBC iPlayer.

The production stars Alan Oke in the title role with Giselle Allen as Ellen Orford. The work was conducted by Steuart Bedford. The performance also featured the Britten-Pears Orchestra and the choruses of Opera North and Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

The production, which was directed by Tim Albery was notable for setting the opera on a beach by the North Sea. Set designer Leslie Travers utilized boats and timbers right by the water’s edge to add to the immersive qualities of the production.

At the time of the performances, The Guardian’s review noted that this production was stated with “immense skill, unobtrusively updating the action to the time of its composition during the second world war, with an opening fly-past by a 1944 Spitfire adding a bit more color.”

Audiences will be able to check out the production for 30 days on BBC iPlayer.
