Pavel Petrov, Piotr Buszewski & Marjukka Tepponen Lead Oper Graz’s 2020-21 Season

Opera Graz in Austria has announced its 2020-21 season featuring several new productions and revivals.

Here is a look at the opera and operetta performances for the season.

Nadja Loschky directs a new production of Weinberg’s “Die Passagierin” starring Nadja Stefanoff, Markus Butter, Tetiana Miyus, Eva-​Maria Schmid, Antonia Cosmina Stancu, Anna Brull, Andrea Purtić, Mareike Jankowski, Sieglinde Feldhofer, Mana Iwata, Ju Suk, Joanna Motulewicz, and Dshamilja Kaiser.

Roland Kluttig, Oksana Lyniv, and Marcus Merkel alternate at the pit.

Performance Dates: Sept. 15-Dec. 11, 2020

Marcus Merkel and Andrea Sanguineti conduct a revival of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” with Alexey Birkus and Markus Butter alternating the title role.

The cast also includes Dmitrii Lebamba, Anna Princeva, Katerina Tretyakova, Dmitry Ivanchey, Andrzej Lampert, Pavel Petrov, Jana Kurucová, Anna Brull, Neven Crnić, Tapani Plathan, Dariusz Perczak, Eva-​Maria Schmid, and Sieglinde Feldhofer.

Performance Dates: Sept. 25-Oct. 31, 2020

The company is set to present a concert performance of “Doch bin ich nirgend, ach! zu Haus.”

Performance Date: Oct. 23, 2020

Marjukka Tepponen sings the title role in a new production of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly.” Francesco Angelico and Marcus Merkel lead the production by Floris Visser. The cast is rounded out by Mareike Jankowski, Antonia Cosmina Stancu, Mykhailo Malafii, Neven Crnić, and Dariusz Perczak.

Performance Dates: Oct. 25, 2020-May 20, 2021

Olga Neuwirth’s “Die Stadt ohne Juden” will be performed with Cornelius Obonya.

Performance Date: Dec. 6, 2020

Smetana’s “Die verkaufte Braut” will be directed by Adriana Altaras and conducted by Marius Burkert and Roland Kluttig. The cast will include Markus Butter, Mareike Jankowski, Sieglinde Feldhofer, Tetiana Miyus, Daeho Kim, Antonia Cosmina Stancu, Albert Memeti, and Pavel Petrov.

Performance Dates: Dec. 12, 2020-Feb. 28, 2021

Offenbach’s “Die Großherzogin von Gerolstein” is set to be conducted by Julian Gaudiano and Marcus Merkel and be directed by Peter Lund.

The new production will be directed by Martin Fournier, Alexander Kaimbacher, Sieglinde Feldhofer, Neven Crnić, Wilfried Zelinka, Dariusz Perczak, Markus Butter, Thomas Essl, Daniel Doujenis, Markus Murke, and Anna Brull.

Performance Dates: Jan. 16-April 24, 2021

Jordan Shanahan sings the title role in Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Holländer” in a new production by Sandra Leupold. The cast includes Wilfried Zelinka, Cornelia Beskow, Elisabet Strid, and Magnus Vigilius.

Performance Dates: March 13-June 2, 2021

Nino Rota’sIl cappello di paglia di Firenze” is set to be conducted by Bernd Mottl with Friedrich Eggert directing a new production. The cast includes Piotr Buszewski, Daeho Kim, Anna Brull, Tetiana Miyus, Ivan Oreščanin, and Antonia Cosmina Stancu.

Performance Dates: April 18-June 27, 2021

Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” is set to be conducted by Marcus Merkel with Dariusz Perczak, Sonja Šarić, Tetiana Miyus, Sieglinde Feldhofer, Neven Crnić, and Antonia Cosmina Stancu.

Performance Dates: May 27-June 23, 2021

Roland Kluttig conducts Sibelius’ “Der Sturm” in a concert performance with Anne Bennent, David Bennentm, Sebastian Wendelin, Mareike Jankowski, Markus Butter, Albert Memeti, Tetiana Miyus, and Martin Fournier.

Performance Dates: June 11 & 24, 2021

The company will also present a production of “The Corridor.”
