Deutsche Oper am Rhein Announces First Half of 2020-21 Season

The Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf has announced the first three months of its 2020-21 season featuring chamber operas, among other works. Here is a look at the schedule.

The season opens with Comedian Harmonists in concert with Cornel Frey, Jussi Myllys, Luis Fernando Piedra, David Fischer, Florian Simson,  Sander De Jong, Dmitri Vargin, Jake Muffett, Günes Gürle, Sami Luttinen, Patrick Francis Chestnut, and Dirk Weiler. Patrick Francis Chestnut conducts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 11-Dec. 29, 2020

Viktor Ullmanns’ “Der Kaiser von Atlantis” is set to star Emmett O’Hanlon, Thorsten Grümbel, Luke Stoker, Torben Jürgens, and David Fischer. Axel Kober conducts Ilaria Lanzino’s production.

Performance Dates: Sept. 19-Nov. 19, 2020

Johannes Erath conducts “Vissi d’Arte,” an evening of music by Puccini, Verdi, Wagner, Strauss, Offenbach, and Cole. Soloists include Morenike Fadayomi, Maria Kataeva, Stefan Heidemann, Andrés Sulbarán, and Heidi Elisabeth Meier.

Ralf Lange conducts Weinberg’s “Masel Tov! Wir Gratulieren!” with Philipp Westerbarkei directing. Lavinia Dames, Elena Sancho Pereg, Kimberley Boettger-Soller, Anna Harvey, Heidi Elisabeth Meier, Sylvia Hamvasi, Jorge Espino,  Roman Hoza, and Norbert Ernst star.

Performance Dates: Oct. 29-Dec. 16, 2020

Boris Blacher’s “Romeo und Julia” is set to star Jussi Myllys and Cornel Frey as Romeo and Paula Iancic and Lavinia Dames alternating as Julia. Christoph Stöcker conducts Manuel Schmitt’s production.

Performance Dates: Nov. 6-Dec. 28, 2020

Fallas’ “El retablo de maese Pedro” is set to star Sergej Khomov, Johannes Preißinger, David Fischer, Valerie Eickhoff, Richard Šveda, and Jake Muffett.

Performance Dates: Nov. 7-Dec. 25, 2020

Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” will be shown on three different nights. The cast will include Michael Weinius and Daniel Frank alternating the role of Tristan, Linda Watson sings Isolde.

Katarzyna Kuncio and Sarah Ferede share the role of Brangäne, Bogdan Baciu and Richard Šveda alternate Kurwenal, and David Fischer and Ovidiu Purcel sing the Seeman. The cast is rounded out by Hans-Peter König as King Marke and Dmitri Vargin as Melot.

Concerts

“Rendezvous um halb 8” is set to be performed four times.

The Deutsche Oper am Rhien will present a concert with music by Bernstein, Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky, and Elgar.

“Viva l’italianità!” will showcase arias from Bel Canto works with soloists Adela Zaharia, Ramona Zaharia, Bogdan Baciu, and Bogdan Taloș. David Crescenzi accompanies on piano.

Performance Dates: Oct. 11, 13, 18, 23, 25, 28, & 31, 2020

Axel Kober conducts “Salon Pitzelberger.” The operetta concert will star Stefan Heidemann, Elena Sancho Pereg, Cornel Frey, Luis Fernando Piedra, Johannes Preißinger, and Romana Noack.

Performance Dates: Oct. 25, 30, Nov. 6, & Dec. 10, 2020

Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel” will star Kimberley Boettger-Soller and Anna Harvey as Hansel, Anke Krabbe and Heidi Elisabeth Meier as Gretel, Romana Noack as Gertrude, Bruno Balmelli, Anooshah Golesorkhi, and Stefan Heidemann as Peter, and Morenike Fadayomi as the Witch.

Performance Dates: Dec. 16, 20, 23, & 25, 2020

The silverkonzert will be held to celebrate the New Year.
