Derrell Acon & Anthony Roth Costanzo Headline Long Beach Opera’s Fall 2020 Programming

Long Beach Opera has announced three programs for its fall 2020 season. All performances and events will be presented virtually.

First up will be “2020 Songbook,” a fundraiser in which sponsors will commission a new piece of music by an emerging composer, who have been selected by a panel of composers including Anthony Davis, Annie Gosfield, David Lang, George Lewis, and Du Yun. The event will be hosted by Anthony Roth Costanzo.

Streaming Date: Nov. 15, 2020

The company will present “VIVA VERDI: Why Giuseppe and Gang Would Be BLM Activists,” a virtual seminar taught by Derrell Acon, the Long Beach Opera’s Director of Engagement and Equity. The seminar will be presented across four weeks.

Streaming Date: Starts Oct. 6, 2020

Finally, the organization will create a digital version of “The Creative In Me,” a newly commissioned family opera featuring arias from Black composers throughout history.
