The Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona has announced that Rachel Willis-Sørensen will sing the role of Leonora in Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” replacing Anna Netrebko.

The news comes a day after Netrebko was forced to withdraw from the Oct. 1 and 4 performances due to contracting COVID-19.

Willis-Sørensen is currently performing “La Traviata” at the Opera de Bordeaux and is scheduled to return to the Staatsoper Berlin and Deutsche Oper Berlin. The soprano has performed at some of the greatest houses in the world including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Wiener Staatsoper, Houston Grand Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Santa Fe Opera, Opernhaus Zurich, and Teatro Reggio di Torino.

The upcoming performances will mark the soprano’s debut at the Liceu and she will join a cast that includes Yusif Euvazov, Ludovic Tézier, and Okka von der Damerau. Gustavo Dudamel conducts the highly anticipated concert performances.
