Olga Peretyatko, Benjamin Appl, Nina Stemme, Thomas Hampson Headline Verbier Festival 2021

The Verbier Festival has announced its 2021 edition.

The company announced that it plans to move forward with performances featuring live audiences, but will limit programs to around 70 minutes without intermissions. Audiences will be required to wear masks on at all times during performances with physical distancing enforced as well. Pre-concert chats will only be available online.

For the purposes of this article, we will focus on opera-related performances.

Baritone Benjamin Appl and pianist James Bailieu will perform lieder by Schubert.

Performance Date: July 18, 2021

Soprano Olga Peretyatko will join forces with pianist Matthias Samuil for “Summertime,” a concert featuring music by Schumann, Wolf, Wagner, Mendelssohn, de Fallas, Dvorak, Gershwin, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Puccini, and Gounod.

Performance Date: July 19, 2021

Benjamin Appl will perform alongside pianist James Bailieu, violinist Johan Dalene, cellist Anastasia Kobekina, and the Esmé Quartet in a program of music by Beethoven, Britten, Schubert, Strauss, Barber, Holst, and Vaughan Williams.

Performance Date: July 22, 2021

Daniele Gatti will lead a concert performance of the second Act of “Tristan und Isolde” with Nina Stemme, Stuart Skelton, René Pape, and Okka van der Damerau.

Performance Date: July 23, 2021

Baritone Matthais Goerne and pianist Nikolaï Lugansky will take on Schubert’s “Winterreise.”

Performance Date: July 29, 2021

Baritone Thomas Hampson will perform alongside violinist Lawrence Power, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and pianist Julien Quentin. The program will feature “Escape from Paradise, Los Angeles 1943.”

Performance Date: July 30, 2021

Matthias Goerne will perform a concert of music by Schubert alongside conductor Lahav Shani and the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. The concert will also include music by Schoenberg and Wagner.

Performance Date: July 31, 2021

James Gaffigan will lead a concert performance of Puccini’s “La Bohème” starring Sungho Kim, Stephen Marsh, Alexander York, Edward Jowle, Yaritza Nicol Veliz Aquea, Erika Baikoff, and Jean-Philippe Mc Clish.
