The Enescu Festival has confirmed its 2021 season.

The festival held in Bucharest, Romania will run from August 28 to Sept. 26 and will include five operas among other programming. There will also be COVID-safety measures implemented to ensure the safety of all audience members.

Sir Simon Rattle conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in Ondřej Adámek’s Song cycle. Magdalena Kožená performs the composition which was written for her. The concert will also include Mahler’s Symphony No. 10.

Vladimir Jurowski conducts the Rund-funk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Choir of the George Enescu Philharmonic in Enescu’s Symphony No. 5 with Marius Vlad Budoiu. The concert also includes Stravinsky’s “The Flood: A Musical Play” and “Les Noces.” Elena Manistina, Daria Terekhova, and Vladimir Ognev.

Alexander Liebreich conducts the Transylvania Philharmonic Orchestra of Cluj-Napoca in Cornel Țăranu’s  Aphoristic Symphony, Jiří Kadeřábek’s “In me la morte” for Soprano and Orchestra, Dieter Ammann’s The Piano Concerto, and Pascal Dusapin’s “Wenn du dem Wind” for Mezzo-soprano and Orchestra.

Răzvan Apetrei conducts the Royal Choir and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Brasovin Jean-Baptiste Lully’s “Le Ballet Royal de la Nuit” – Overture, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 26, Purcell’s “Ode for the Birthday of Queen Mary” Z 323, “Come Ye Sons of Art,” and Händel’s “Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne” HWV 74, “Eternal source of light divine” with Daniela Bucsan, Alina Silvia Dragnea, and Iustinian Zetea.

Hansjörg Albrecht conducts Bach’s St John Passion with Wiebke Lehmkuhl, Patrick Grahl, Daniel Johannsen, Michael Volle, Christian Immler, and Regula Mühlemann.

Diana Damrau and Jérémie Rhorer team up with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen for an evening of Strauss songs and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 3

Joyce DiDonato is joined by an ensemble for an evening of Handel, Rameau, Rossi, Monteverdi Cesti, Merula, Dowland, and Buonamente.

Asher Fisch conducts Zemlinsky’s “Der Zwerg” with Lucia Cesaroni, Olga Bezsmertna, Kristinn Sigmundsson, Roderick Dixon, and Antonia Chehovska.

Paavo Järvi conducts the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich and the Radio Romania Academic Choir in Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 in D minor. Wiebke Lehmkuhl performs the solo part.

Valery Gergiev is joined by the Mariinsky Theatre for Shostakovich’s “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.” The cast is set to star Vladimir Vaneev, Evgeny Akimov, Evgenia Muraveva, Oleg Videman, Tatiana Kratsova, and Andrei Popov, among others.

Valery Gergiev conducts Enesuc’s “Vox Maris” and Stravinsky’s “Oedipus Rex.” The Stravinsky work is set to star Alexander Mikhailov, Yulia Matochkina, Evgeny Nikitin, Mikhail Petrenko, and Alexander Timchenko. They are joined by the Mariinsky Theatre.

Gabriel Bebeşelea conducts the Opera de Marseille in Grieg’s “Peer Gynt” alongside Robert Powell, Enescu, Alin Anca, Tiberius Simu, Bogdan Baciu, and Rodica Vica.

Lawrence Foster conducts Berg’s “Lulu” with Annika Gerhards in the title role, Janina Baechle, Alexander Kaimbacher, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Nickolai Schukoff, Roman Astakhov, Jozef Benci, Paul Gay and Ilseyar Khayrullova.  Soloists are accompanied by the Opera de Marseille.
