Vienna State Opera Announces New Date for ‘Parsifal’ Starring Jonas Kaufmann & Elīna Garanča

The Vienna State Opera has announced that it will be streaming Wagner’s “Parsifal” live on Sunday, April 11, 2021.

The new production by Kirill Serebrennikov will star Jonas Kaufmann in the title role alongside Ludovic Tézier as Amfortas, and Elīna Garanča as Kundry. Other cast members include Georg Zeppenfield as Gurnemanz, Wolfgang Koch as Klingsor, and Stefan Cerny as Titurel. The production will be conducted by Philippe Jordan.

Per Beckmesser, rehearsals with Serebrennikov is in Russia, and rehearsals are being conducted via Zoom, which is apparently upsetting several artists in the production.

The live stream was originally scheduled for April 1, 2021 but was postponed following a positive COVID-19 case. As a result of that positive test, rehearsals were postponed and the entire production was put on a temporary hold.

“Parsifal” endured a similar fate to the Vienna State Opera’s “Carmen” and “Le Nozze di Figaro” productions, which were also postponed before eventually being streamed.
