Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos Reopens with ‘Rusalka’

By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlo in Lisbon will reopen its theater with Dvořák’s “Rusalka.”

The production will star Dora Rodrigues in the title role, Peter Wedd as the Prince, Thomas Mayer as Vodník, Maria Luísa de Freitas as  Ježibaba, and Susana Vieira as Foreign Princess.

Performances will be held on April 30, May 2, and 4, 2021 for a limited and socially distanced audience.

The Portuguese company is the latest opera house to announce reopening following the announcements of the Teatro La Fenice, Maggio Musicale, Opernhaus Zürich, and Theater Basel.

Portugal recently reopened restaurants, shopping malls, and cinemas and will resume classes at high schools and universities. The country will continue to have border restrictions with Spain, which has a higher infection rate than Portugal, until at least the end of the month.
