Karita Mattila, Sara Jakubiak & Camilla Nylund Headline Finnish National Opera’s 2021-22 Season

The Finnish National Opera has announced its 2021-22 season featuring new productions and several workshops, concerts, and musicals.

The season will also mark the first season of Chief Conductor, Hannu Lintu. Here is a breakdown of the season:

Opera & Musicals

Leoncavallo’sPagliacci and Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana open the season with Hannu Lintu conducting. Mascagni’s opera stars Niina Keitel, Johanna Lehesvuori, Eduardo Aladren, Àngel Òdena, and Roberto Frontali while Leoncavallo’s stars Marjukka Tepponen, Mika Pohjonen, Àngel Òdena, and Frontali.

Performance Dates: August 20-Sept. 14, 2021

Camilla Nylund sings the title role in Puccini’s Tosca with Andrea Carè as Cavaradossi and Tuomas Pursio as Scarpia. The production is directed Patrick Fournillier conducts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 16-Oct. 27, 2021

The opera “Autuus (Bliss)” composed by Antti Auvinen, which had its world premiere in 2015, will be performed three times and will feature conductor Nils Schweckendiek and a cast that includes Linnéa Sundfaer Casserly, Jarno Lehtola, and Sampo Haapaniemi.

Performance Dates: Oct. 27-30, 2021

“The Phantom of the Opera” will be presented with multiple casts that include Sanna Iljin, Hanna-Liina Võsa, Iida Antola, Ville Rusanen, Kevin Greenlaw, Olli Tuovinen, Jaakko Kortekangas, Sauli Tiilikainen, Jussi Miilunpalo, and Petri Vesa. Nick Davies and Kurt Kopecky conduct.

Performance Dates: Oct. 22-Dec. 31, 2021

“Love Never Dies” is set to be performed with a cast that includes Garðar Thór Cortes, Marjukka Tepponen, Kevin Greenlaw, Helena Juntunen, Josefin Silén, Helianna Herkkola, Ville Salonen, Jussi Merikanto, and Alexandre Goncharov Dias.

Performance Dates: Nov. 9-10, 2021

Tuuli Takala and Nadya Pavlova star in Verdi’sLa Traviata” with Irakli Kakhidze and Aleksei Isaev.

Performance Dates: Dec. 10, 2021-Jan. 20, 2022

Peter Wedd, Ville Rusanen, Timo Olavi Riihonen, Jussi Merikanto, Markus Nieminen, and Nicholas Söderlund star in Britten’s “Billy Budd” with Hannu Lintu conducting.

Performance Dates: Jan. 28-Feb. 24, 2022

Lehár’s “The Merry Widow” star in Johanna Lehesvuori, Jussi Vänttinen, Mari Palo, and Markus Nykänen. Kurt Kopecky directs while Jussi Tapola conducts.

Performance Dates: Feb. 11-March 10, 2022

Sara Jakubiak stars in a production of Strauss’Salome directed by Christof Loy. Lawrence Renes and Hannu Lintu share the podium with a cast that includes Mihails Čulpajevs, Nikolai Schukoff, and Karin Lovelius.

Performance Dates: March 18-April 29, 2022

Olafur Sigurdarson, Tomi Punkeri, Konu Kim, and Hanna Rantala star in Donizetti’sDon Pasquale directed by Tuomas Parkkinen and conducted by Alberto Hold-Garrido.

Performance Dates: March 31-April 30, 2022

The company will present “Total Karita” featuring Karita Mattila in a two-part evening showcase that will feature the soprano in Poulenc’s “La voix humaine” and beloved musical classics, popular music, and more. The work will be directed by Jussi Nikkilä and conducted by Dalia Stasevska.

Performance Dates: May 18-June 2, 2022

 

 

Workshops, Concert, & Children’s Opera 

“Organ Night & Aria: The secret invitation” will feature soprano Soloist Sonja Herranen and conductor Tarmo Peltokoski. The program will include music by Wagner and Strauss.

Performance Date: August 5-6, 2021

“Mini Opera: The Magic Flute casts a familiar opera in a completely new light. There are twists and turns and fun all around as fairy-tale characters come to life in a charming miniature theatre. Papageno, the birdman, is the narrator in Mozart’s classic tale. The cheerful Mini Operas are recommended for everyone over the age of 2.

Performance Dates: August 30-Nov. 25, 2021

First Taste of Opera & Ballet will wake up all the senses of both babies and their parents. The workshops will feature performances in song, play, hearing, and touching. The half-hour workshops are either for infants (about 0 to 9 months) or babies who can already crawl (about 10 to 18 months). 

Performance Dates: August 31-Nov. 18, 2021

Opera & Ballet in Action are workshops for 5 to 6-years-old in which they will experience the fascinating world of opera and ballet by playing instruments, dancing, and making art and crafts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 13-Nov. 30, 2021

School opera: The Source is a school opera, in which the story progresses in real-time. The strikingly exciting tale poses some very current questions. The work will be directed by Riikka Oksanen.

Performance Dates: Nov. 26-27, 2021
