Marina Rebeka, Malin Byström, J’Nai Bridges & Adela Zaharia Highlight Dutch National Opera’s 2021-22 Season

The Dutch National Opera has announced its 2021-22 season featuring new productions, new voices, films, and a festival dedicated to Orpheus.

Productions 

Zemlinsky’s “Der Zwerg” opens the season in a new production by Nanouk Leopold. Lorenzo Viotti conducts the opera which is set to star Clay Hilley in the title role, Olga Kulchynska as Donna Clara, Annette Dasch as Ghita, and Nicholas Brownlee as Don Estoban.

Performance Dates: Sept. 4-18, 2021

Joseph Haydn and Janiv Oron’s “Missa in tempore belli” gets a new production conducted by Lorenzo Viotti and directed by Barbora Horáková. Mingjie Lei and Polly Leech star.

Performances: Sept. 6-21, 2021
 
Sanne Rovers directs “Crazy Days” a new documentary starring Riccardo Minasi, Ying Fang, Davide Luciano, and Polly Leech, among others.

Michel van der Aa’s “Upload” makes its Dutch premiere conducted by Otto Tausk. Michel van der Aa directs the production starring Roderick Williams and Julia Bullock.

Performance Dates: Oct. 1-8, 2021

Michel van der Aa’s “Upload” will get a film production with Otto Tausk conducting and Roderick Williams and Julia Bullock starring. Michel van der Aa directs with cinematographer Joost Rietdijk. The film version will also star actors Katja Herbers, Ashley Zukerman, Esther Mugambi, Samuel West, and Claron McFadden.

Premiere and release: TBA

Christof Loy directs the film production of “Springtime in Amsterdam.” The film will include music by Jacques Brel, Jean Ferrat, Pieter Goemans, Emmerich Kálmán, Jerome Kern, Zoltán Kodály, Carl Millöcker, Johann Strauss Jr, Oscar Straus, and Charles Trenet and stars Annette Dasch, Thomas Oliemans, Theresa Kronthaler, Norman Reinhardt, Henk Poort, Sunnyi Melles, and Barry Atsma. Marko Letonja conducts.

Jérémie Rohrer conducts a revival of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” starring Domen Križaj, Rafał Siwek, Adela Zaharia, Long Long, Amanda Majeski, Adrian Sampetrean, Frederik Bergman, and Lilian Farahani.

Performance Dates: Nov. 4-28, 2021

Neo Muyanga and Maarten van Hinte’s “Anansi” gets its world premiere with Kenza Koutchoukali directing. The opera will star Zwakele Tshabalala, Katia Ledoux, Claron McFadden, Martin Mkhize, and singers of the Cape Town Opera.

Tatjana Gürbaca directs a new production of Vedi’s “La Traviata” starring Mané Galoyan as Violetta, Bogdan Volkov as Alfredo, and George Petean as Giorgio Germont. Andrea Battistoni conducts.

Performance Dates: Dec. 4-26, 2021

“Le lacrime di Eros” makes its world premiere with music by Jacopo Peri, Giulio Caccini, Claudio Monteverdi, Luca Marenzio, Emilio de Cavalieri, Cristoforo Malvezzi, and Lorenzo Allegri. Raphaël Pichon conducts the production by Romeo Castellucci. The production stars Huw Montague Rendall, Mariana Flores, Lucile Richardot, Zachary Wilder, and Nahuel di Pierro.

Performance Dates: Jan. 20-30, 2022

Barrie Kosky directs a new production of Puccini’s “Tosca” conducted by Lorenzo Viotti. Malin Byström sings the title role alongside Joshua Guerrero as Cavaradossi and Gevorg Hakobyan as Scarpia.

Performance Dates: April 12-May 6, 2022

Marina Rebeka stars in Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena” in a new production by Jetske Mijnssen. Enrique Mazzola conducts the opera which is also set to star J’Nai Bridges, Ismael Jordi, and Evgeny Stavinsky.

Performance Dates: May 7-29, 2022

Weber’s “Der Freischütz” gets a new production conducted by Riccardo Minasi and directed by Kirill Serebrennikov. Johanni van Oostrum and Benjamin Bruns star.

Performance Dates: June 3-25, 2022

Jennifer Holloway stars in Strauss’ “Salome” with Brian Mulligan as Jochanaan. Lahav Shani conducts.

Performance Dates: Jan. 29-Feb. 14, 2022

Opera Foward Festival – 2022

Manfred Trojahn’s “Eurydice – Die Liebenden blind” will be conducted by Erik Nielsen and directed by Pierre Audi. The work will star Andrè Schuen as Orpheus, Julia Kleiter as Eurydice, Thomas Oliemans as Pluto, and Katia Ledoux as Proserpina.

Performances Dates: March 5-17, 2022

[Collective Works] will have its world premiere. The production will feature music by Asko and Schönberg and will be conducted by Manoj Kamps. Lisenka Heijboer Castañón directs.

Performance Dates: March 2022

“Orphée | L’Amour | Eurydice” will have its world premiere featuring music by Christoph W. Gluck and Zbigniew Wolny. The production will be staged by Robin Coops with VR direction by Avinash Changa. Lucas van Lierop stars in the production.

Performance Dates: March 2022

Philipp Venables’s “Denis & Katya” will make its DNO premiere in a production by Ted Huffman. Musicians of the Residentie Orkest The Hague will star.
