Christian Thielemann’s Contract at Semperoper Dresden Not Renewed

By Francisco Salazar

The Semperoper Dresden has announced that will not be renewing Christian Thielemann’s contract as chief conductor.

As a result, the conductor will leave the company at the end of the 2023-24 season. Barbara Kelpsch, the Minister of Culture Sajonia,  confirmed the news and also noted that superintendent Peter Theiler will end his term at the end of the 2023-24 season.

According to reports, the decision came due to Theiler and Thielemann’s constant clashes and Thielemann’s conservative repertoire decisions.

Thielemann became Music director of the Staatskapelle Dresden in 2011 and is currently the Music Director of the Bayreuth Festival and the Salzburg Easter Festival. The conductor is well known throughout the world and has collaborated with such stars as Jonas Kaufmann, Anna Netrebko, Diana Damrau, and Renee Fleming.
