Patricia Petibon, Carmen Giannattasio, Wallis Giunta & Enea Scala Headline Opéra de Lyon’s 2021-22 Season

Opéra de Lyon has announced its 2021-22 season. Here is the full slate.

Operas

A concert version of Massenet‘s “Manon” will showcase Saimir Pirgu as Le Chevalier des Grieux, Artur Ruciński as Lescaut, and Patricia Petibon in the title role. The cast will be rounded out with Éric Huchet, Philippe Estèphe, Nicolas Testé, Margot Genet, Amandine Ammirati, and Clémence Poussin. Daniele Rustioni conducts.

The opera is a co-production with the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.

Performance Date: Sep. 12, 2021

Verdi‘s “Falstaff” will star Juan Francisco Gatell in the role of Fenton, Stéphane Degout as Ford, Francesco Pittari as Dr. Caïus, Carmen Giannattasio in the role of Alice Ford, Giulia Semenzato as Nannetta, Antoinette Dennefeld as Mrs. Meg Page, Daniela Barcellona in the role of Mrs. Quickly, Rodolphe Briand as Bardolfo, Antonio di Matteo as Pistola, and Christopher Purves in the title role. Daniele Rustioni conducts the production by Barrie Kosky.

The opera is a co-production with the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Bolshoi Theatre, Teatro di San Carlo, and Komische Oper Berlin.

The world premiere of Diana Soh’s “Zylan ne chantera plus” will spotlight tenor Benjamin Alunni. Richard Brunel is the director.

Performance Dates: Nov. 6 – Nov. 13, 2021

Georg Friedrich Händel‘s oratorio “Le Messie” HWV 56 will star soprano Sophie Bevan, alto Christine Rice, tenor Allan Clayton, and bass Christopher Purves. Stefano Montanari conducts the production by Deborah Warner.

The oratorio is a co-production with the English National Opera.

Performance Dates: Dec. 13 2021 – Jan. 2, 2022

George Abbott, Richard Bissell, Richard Adler, and Jerry Ross’ “The Pajama Game” will spotlight Cloé Horry, Mathilde Lemonnier, Pierre Lecomte, Marianne Devos, Alexis Meriaux, Marie Glorieux, and Amélie Munier. Gérard Lecointe conducts the production by Jean Lacornerie and Raphaël Cottin.

This version of the opera is a co-production with the Théâtre de la Croix-Rousse – Lyon, Théâtre de La Renaissance – Oullins Lyon Métropole, Angers Nantes Opéra, and Mahagonny-cie.

Performance Dates: Dec. 14 – Dec. 18, 2021

Astor Piazzolla’s opera-tango “María de Buenos Aires” will spotlight Wallis Giunta and Luis Alejandro Orozco. Valentina Peleggi conducts the production by Yaron Lifschitz – Circa. The opera is a co-production with les Nuits de Fourvière.

Performance Dates: Jan. 15 – Jan. 23, 2021

Verdi’s “Rigoletto” will star Enea Scala as Duca di Mantua, Nina Minasyan in the role of Gilda, and Dalibor Jenis in the title role. The cast also includes Stefan Cerny, Agata Schmidt, Daniele Terenzi, Grégoire Mour, Dumitru Madarasan, Roman Chabaranok, and Heiko Pinkowski. Daniele Rustioni and Francesco Lanzillotta conduct the production by Axel Ranisch.

Performance Dates: March 18 – April 7, 2022

Franz Schreker’s “Irrelohe” will showcase Tobias Hächler, Piotr Micinski, Ambur Braid, Lioba Braun, Julian Orlishausen, Michaël Gniffke, Peter Kirk, and Simon Mechlinski. Bernhard Kontarsky conducts the production by David
Bösch.

Performance Dates: March 19 – April 2, 2022

Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Trauernacht” will present extracts from cantatas BWV 60, 46, 82, 90, 127, 146, 159, 169, and 668. Katie Mitchell is the director.

This production of the opera will be co-produced with the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Dutch National Opera Amsterdam, Opéra national de Bordeaux, and Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian.

Performance Dates: March 19 – March 27, 2022

Engelbert Humperdinck and Sergio Menozzi’s “Hänsel, Gretel…” will spotlight Dutch-French mezzo-soprano Claire Gascoin and baritone Louis De Lavignère. Karine Locatelli conducts the production by Samuel Achache.

The opera is a co-production with the Théâtre de La Renaissance – Oullins Lyon Métropole.

Performance Dates: April 9 – April 20, 2022

Thierry Escaich’s opera “Shirine” will star Hélène Guilmette as Shirine, Julien Behr, Jean-Sébastien Bou, Stephen Mills, Théophile Alexandre, Majdouline Zerari, Laurent Alvaro, and Florent Karrer. Martyn Brabbins conducts the production by Richard Brunel.

Performance Dates: May 2 – May 12, 2022

Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt” will spotlight Jérémy Lopez, Martine Schambacher, and Jean-Philippe Salerio. Elena Schwarz conducts the production by Angélique Clairand.

Performance Dates: June 4 – June 13, 2022

 

 

Concerts

Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn’s “Shakespeare” will spotlight Chorus of l’Opéra de Lyon. Soloists will be announced at a later date. Daniele Rustioni conducts.

Performance Date: Oct. 24, 2021

Olivier Messiaen, Ernest Chausson, Erik Satie and Claude Debussy’s “De l’amour et de la mer” will showcase French mezzo-soprano Aude Éxtremo.

Performance Date: Nov. 28, 2021

Tristan” will star Aušrinė Stundytė, Michael Spyres, Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, and Stefan Cerny. Daniele Rustioni conducts.

Performance Date: Feb. 13, 2022

Brindisi!” will present works by Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini. Soloists will be announced at a later date. Stefano Montanari conducts.

Performance Date: Dec. 31, 2021

Concert du Nouvel an” will showcase music by Rossini, Mozart, and Strauss. Soloists will be announced at a later date. Stefano Montanari conducts.
