The Royal Opera House Covent Garden has announced full details of its exciting 2021-22 season, which will star some of the world’s greatest performers. The Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season and digital program will be announced later this summer, alongside further details of the Linbury Theatre Season.

Here is the full slate.

Verdi‘s “Rigoletto” opens the season with Lisette Oropesa and Rosa Feola as Gilda, Liparit Avetisyan and Javier Camarena as Duca di Mantua, and Carlos Álvarez and Luca Salsi in the title role. The cast also includes Andrea Mastroni, Ramona Zaharia, Evgeny Stavinsky, and Aigul Akhmetshina. Sir Antonio Pappano, Stefano Montanari, and Paul Wynne Griffiths conduct the new production by Oliver Mears.

Performance Dates: Sept. 13, 2021 – March 12, 2022

Mozart‘s “Die Zauberflöte” features Daniel Behle and Bernard Richter as Tamino, Salome Jicia and Christina Gansch as Pamina, Brenda Rae and Kathryn Lewek as Queen of The Night, and Krzysztof Baczyk and James Platt in the role of Sarastro. The cast will be rounded out by Huw Montague Rendall, Peter Kellner, Michael Colvin, Peter Hoare, Haegee Lee, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, David Soar, Alexandra Lowe, Hanna Hipp, Stephanie Wake-Edwards, Anita Watson, Rachel Kelly, Gaynor Keeble, Harry Nicoll, Donald Maxwell, and Alan Pingarrón. Hartmut Haenchen and Richard Hetherington conduct the production by Sir David McVicar.

Performance Dates: Sept. 15 – Oct. 7, 2021

Asmik Grigorian sings the title role in Leoš Janáček’s “Jenůfa” alongside Karita Mattila, Nicky Spence, Andrew Staples, Elena Zilio, David Stout, Jeremy White, Helene Schneiderman, Jacquelyn Stucker, Angela Simkin, April Koyejo-Audiger, and Yaritza Véliz. Henrik Nánási conducts the production by Claus Guth.

Performance Dates: Sept. 28 – Oct. 12, 2021

Lisette Oropesa, Ekaterina Bakanova, Anush Hovhannisyan, Pretty Yende, Angel Blue, and Hrachuhí Bassénz share the role of Violetta Valéry in Richard Eyre’s production of Verdi’s “La Traviata.” Liparit Avetisyan, Frédéric Antoun, Dmytro Popov and Stephen Costello will portray Alfredo Germont, while Vladimir Stoyanov, Christoph Pohl, Dimitri Platanias, and Christian Gerhaher will appear as Giorgio Germont. Giacomo Sagripanti, Renato Balsadonna, Antonello Manacorda, and Paul Wynne Griffiths conduct.

Performance Dates: Oct. 27, 2021 – April 18, 2022

Verdi’s “Macbeth” will spotlight Anna Pirozzi as Lady Macbeth, and Sir Simon Keenlyside in the title role. The cast also includes Günther Groissböck, David Junghoon Kim, and April Koyejo-Audiger. Daniele Rustioni conducts the production by Phyllida Lloyd.

Elena Stikhina, Anna Pirozzi, and Angela Gheorghiu share the title role in Puccini‘s masterwork “Tosca.” Stefan Pop, Bryan Hymel, and Freddie di Tommaso will perform Mario Cavaradossi, while Michael Volle, Alexey Markov, and Claudio Sgura will appear as Scarpia. Francesco Ivan Ciampa, Oksana Lyniv, and Marco Armiliato conduct the production by Jonathan Kent.

“Wolf Witch Giant Fairy” will be performed in the Linbury Theatre.

Anna Netrebko and Liudmyla Monastyrska share the role of Abigaille in Verdi’s “Nabucco.” The cast also includes Alexander Vinogradov, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, Najmiddin Mavlyanov, Blaise Malaba, Andrés Presno, April Koyejo-Audiger, and Enkhbat Amartuvshin in the title role. Daniel Oren conducts the production by Daniele Abbado.

Performance Dates: Dec. 20, 2021 – Jan. 23, 2022

Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” stars Davide Luciano as Count Almaviva, Federica Lombardi as Countess Almaviva, Giulia Semenzato as Susanna, and Riccardo Fassi as Figaro. The cast also includes Hanna Hipp, Gregory Bonfatti, Monica Bacelli, Gianluca Buratto, Jeremy White, Alexandra Lowe, and Alasdair Elliott. Sir Antonio Pappano and Christopher Willis conduct the production by Sir David McVicar.

Handel‘s “Theodora” will star Julia Bullock, Joyce DiDonato, Jakub Józef Orliński, Ed Lyon, Gyula Orendt, and Thando Mjandana. Katie Mitchell directs the new production conducted by Harry Bicket.

Performance Dates: Jan. 31 – Feb. 16, 2022

Vivaldi’s “Bajazet” will have its premiere at the Linbury Theatre and will star Gianluca Margheri, James Laing, Niamh O’Sullivan, Eric Jurenas, Rachel Kelly, and Aoife Miskelly. Peter Whelan conducts the production by Adele Thomas.

Performance Dates: Feb. 4 – 12, 2022

Britten‘s “Peter Grimes” features Maria Bengtsson as Ellen Orford, Sir Bryn Terfel as Captain Balstrode, Sir John Tomlinson as Swallow, and Allan Clayton in the title role. The cast also includes Jacques Imbrailo, Catherine Wyn-Rogers, Rosie Aldridge, John Graham-Hall, Jennifer France, Alexandra Lowe, James Gilchrist, and Stephen Richardson. Sir Mark Elder conducts the production by Deborah Warner.

Wagner‘s “Lohengrin” stars Jennifer Davis as Elsa von Brabant, Maida Hundeling as Ortrud, Kostas Smoriginas as Von Telramund, and Brandon Jovanovich in the title role. The cast also includes Gábor Bretz and Derek Welton. Jakub Hruša conducts the production by David Alden.

Donizetti‘s “Don Pasquale” features Pretty Yende and Zuzana Marková as Norina, Xabier Anduaga as Ernesto, Andrzej Filonczyk as Malatesta, and Ildebrando d’Arcangelo in the title role. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts the production by Damiano Michieletto.

Stravinsky’s “Mavra” and Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire” will be performed in a double bill with April Koyejo-Audiger, Egor Zhuravskii, Kseniia Nikolaieva, and Alexandra Lowe. Michael Papadopoulos conducts.

Saint-Saëns’ operatic masterpiece “Samson et Dalila” will star Nicky Spence and Elīna Garanča in the title roles alongside Lukasz Golinski, Alan Pingarrón, Chuma Sijeqa, and Thando Mjandana. Sir Antonio Pappano conducts the new production by Richard Jones.

Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” will star Lianna Haroutounian as Cio-Cio-San, Gianluca Terranova and Freddie De Tommaso as Pinkerton, and Lucas Meachem and Gyula Nagy in the role of Sharpless. The cast also includes Kseniia Nikolaieva, Alexander Kravets, Jeremy White, Rachael Lloyd, and Alan Pingarrón. Dan Ettinger conducts the production by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier.

Tom Coult’s “Violet” showcases Elizabeth Atherton, Frances Gregory, and Elliott Carlton Hines. Andrew Gourlay conducts the production by Jude Christian.

Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” will star Jennifer Davis as Fiordiligi, Julie Boulianne as Dorabella, Bogdan Volkov in the role of Ferrando, Gordon Bintner as Guglielmo, Serena Gamberoni as Despina, and Lucio Gallo as Don Alfonso. Julia Jones conducts the production by Philipp Gloger.

Performance Dates: June 25 – July 9, 2022

Mascagni‘s “Cavalleria Rusticana” and Leoncavallo‘s “Pagliacci” will be performed as a double with Jonas Kaufmann in the roles of Turiddu and Canio, Ermonela Jaho as Nedda, and Anita Rachvelishvilli as Santuzza. The cast also includes Dimitri Platanias, Mattia Olivieri, Aigul Akhmetshina, Elena Zilio, and Egor Zhuravskii. Sir Antonio Pappano conducts the production by Damiano Michieletto.

Laura Bowler and Laura Lomas’ “The Blue Woman” will be performed in the Linbury Theatre. Katie Mitchell is the director.

Russell Thomas sings the title role in Verdi’s “Otello” with Hrachuhí Bassénz as Desdemona, and Christopher Maltman as Iago. The cast also includes Piotr Buszewski, Andrés Presno, Kseniia Nikolaieva, Blaise Malaba, and Alexander Köpeczi. Daniele Rustioni conducts the production by Keith Warner.

Performance Dates: July 12 – July 24, 2022

The season concludes with concert performances of Verdi’s “Attila” featuring Ildar Abdrazakov, Sondra Radvanovsky, Sir Simon Keenlyside, Joseph Calleja, and Egor Zhuravskii. Speranza Scappucci conducts.
