Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Nina Stemme, Lisette Oropesa & Juan Diego Flórez Lead Wiener Staatsoper’s 2021-22 Season

The Wiener Staatsoper has announced its 2021-22 season which will spotlight some of the world’s greatest performers and five new productions.

Here is the full slate.

Premieres

Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” will showcase Juan Diego Flórez as Count Almaviva, Marianne Crebassa as Rosina, Davide Luciano in the role of Figaro, Paolo Bordogna as Bartolo, and Ildar Abdrazakov as Basilio. Michele Mariotti conducts the production by Herbert Fritsch.

Performance Dates: Sept. 28 – Oct. 14, 2021

Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” spotlights Hanna-Elisabeth Müller as Donna Anna, Kate Lindsey as Donna Elvira, Philippe Sly as Leporello, and Kyle Ketelsen in the title role. The cast also includes Ain Anger, Stanislas de Barbeyrac, Patricia Nolz, and Peter Kellner. Philippe Jordan conducts the production by Barrie Kosky.

Performance dates: Dec. 5 – 20, 2021

Berg’s “Wozzeck” stars Anja Kampe as Marie, Christina Bock as Margret, and Christian Gerhaher in the title role. The cast will be rounded out by Sean Panikkar, Jörg Schneider, Dmitry Belosselskiy, Josh Lovell, Peter Kellner, Stefan Astakhov, and Thomas Ebenstein. Philippe Jordan conducts the production by Simon Stone.

Performance Dates: March 21 – April 3, 2022

Wagner’s masterpiece “Tristan und Isolde” will get a new look in the production by Calixto Bieito starring Andreas Schager and Martina Serafin in the title roles. The opera also stars René Pape as König Marke and Ekaterina Gubanova as Brangäne as well as Iain Paterson, Clemens Unterreiner, Josh Lovell, Martin Häßler, and Daniel Jenz. Philippe Jordan conducts.

Performance Dates: April 14 – May 1, 2021

Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo” spotlights Georg Nigl, Slávka Zámečníková, Kate Lindsey, Christina Bock, and Andrea Mastroni. Pablo Heras-Casado conducts the production by Tom Morris.

Performance Dates: June 11 – 18, 2022

Revivals

Carmen Giannattasio, Saioa Hernández, and Elena Stikhina share the title role in Puccini’s “Tosca.” Fabio Sartori, Francesco Meli, and Vittorio Grigolo will perform Mario Cavaradossi, while Erwin Schrott, Gevorg Hakobyan, and  Roberto Frontali will appear as Scarpia. Axel Kober, Marco Armiliato, and Pier Giorgio Morandi conduct the production by Margarethe Wallmann.

Performance dates: Sep. 3, 2021 – March 5, 2022

Verdi’s “Falstaff” showcases Boris Pinkhasovich, Frédéric Antoun, Josh Lovell, Eleonora Buratto, Slávka Zámečníková, Vera-Lotte Boecker, Monika Bohinec, Virginie Verrez, Margaret Plummer, and Gerald Finley and Wolfgang Koch in the title role. Nicola Luisotti and Giampaolo Bisanti conduct the production by Marco Arturo Marelli.

Performance Dates: Sept. 4, 2021 – June 24, 2022

Pretty Yende will star as Violetta Valéry in Verdi’s “La Traviata.” Frédéric Antoun will perform Alfredo Germont, while Ludovic Tézier portrays Giorgio Germont. Nicola Luisotti conducts the production by Simon Stone.

Hans Werner Henze’s “Das Verratene Meer” will star Vera-Lotte Boecker, Josh Lovell, Bo Skovhus, Erik Van Heyningen, Kangmin Justin Kim, Stefan Astakhov, and Martin Häßler. Simone Young conducts the production by Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito.

Verdi’s “Otello” stars Rachel Willis-Sorensen as Desdemona, Ludovic Tézier as Iago, Freddie De Tommaso as Cassio, and Gregory Kunde in the title role. Bertrand de Billy conducts the production by Adrian Noble.

Mozart’s operatic masterpiece “Le Nozze di Figaro” will star Andrè Schuen and Michael Nagy as Count Almaviva, Maria Bengtsson as Countess Almaviva, Regula Mühlemann as Susanna, Patricia Nolz and Virginie Verrez in the role of Cherubino, and Philippe Sly and Peter Kellner in the title role. Antonello Manacorda and Adam Fischer conduct the production by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle.

Performance Dates: Sept. 30, 2021 – May 16, 2022

Monteverdi’s “L’Incoronazione di Poppea” stars Virginie Verrez, Xavier Sabata, Christina Bock, Sir Willard White, Vera-Lotte Boecker, and Slávka Zámečníková in the title role. Pablo Heras-Casado conducts the production by Jan Lauwers.

Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” will spotlight Nicole Car as Tatyana, Bogdan Volkov as Lensky, and Andrè Schuen in the title role. The cast also includes Helene Schneiderman, Anna Goryachova, Larissa Diadkova, Dimitry Ivashchenko, and Dan Paul Dumitrescu. Tomáš Hanus conducts the production by Dmitri Tcherniakov.

Ermonela Jaho star in the title role of Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur with Brian Jagde as Maurizio, Nicola Alaimo as Michonnet, and Elīna Garanča as Princess di Bouillon. Omer Meir Wellber conducts the production by Sir David McVicar.

Stephen Costello, Rachel Willis-Sorensen, Adam Palka, and Étienne Dupuis star in Gounod’s “Faust.” Bertrand de Billy conducts the production by Frank Castorf.

Verdi’s “Nabucco” showcases Anna Netrebko as Abigaille, and Enkhbat Amartuvshin and Plácido Domingo in the title role. The cast also includes Alessandro Liberatore, Roberto Tagliavini, and Szilvia Vörös. Paolo Carignani conducts the production by Günter Krämer.

Bizet’s masterwork “Carmen” will star Freddie De Tommaso and Vittorio Grigolo as Don José, Erwin Schrott and Alexander Vinogradov as Escamillo, Vera-Lotte Boecker and Tamuna Gochashvili as Micaëla, and Clémentine Margaine and Anna Goryachova in the title role. Omer Meir Wellber and Alejo Pérez conduct the production by Calixto Bieito.

Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Holländer” stars Franz-Josef Selig, Anja Kampe, Eric Cutler, Noa Beinart, Josh Lovell, and Sir Bryn Terfel in the title role. Bertrand de Billy conducts the production by Christine Mielitz.

Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’amore” spotlights Nina Minasyan and Olga Kulchynska as Adina, Juan Diego Flórez, Stephen Costello, and Josh Lovell as Nemorino; Clemens Unterreiner and Sergey Kaydalov as Belcore; and Erwin Schrott and Misha Kiria as Dulcamara. Riccardo Frizza and Marco Armiliato conduct the production by Otto Schenk.

Performance Dates: Nov. 26, 2021 – March 6, 2022

Nicola Alaimo, Ambrogio Maestri, Cyrille Dubois, Sergey Kaydalov, Kristina Mkhitaryan and Slávka Zámečníková star in Irina Brook’s production of “Don Pasquale.” Giacomo Sagripanti and Evelino Pidò conduct.

Performance Dates: Dec. 7, 2021 – May 2, 2022

Wagner’s “Parsifal” will star Wolfgang Koch in the roles of Amfortas and Klingsor, René Pape as Gurnemanz, Anja Kampe as Kundry, and Brandon Jovanovich in the title role. Philippe Jordan conducts the production by Kirill Serebrennikov.

Performance Dates: Dec. 12 – 26, 2021

The Italian version of Verdi’s “Don Carlo” spotlights Ain Anger as Philippo II, Boris Pinkhasovich as Rodrigo, Dmitry Ulyanov as Der Großinquisitor, Asmik Grigorian as Elisabetta di Valois, Anita Rachvelishvili as Eboli, and Fabio Sartori in the title role. Franz Welser-Möst conducts the production by Daniele Abbado.

Performance dates: Dec. 16 – 25, 2021

Johann Strauss’ operetta “Die Fledermaus” gets traditional performances for the New year. The famed operetta here stars Andreas Schager as Gabriel von Eisenstein, and Rachel Willis-Sorensen as Rosalinde. The cast also includes Wolfgang Bankl, Christina Bock, Jörg Schneider, Clemens Unterreiner, Vera-Lotte Boecker, and Peter Simonischek. Bertrand de Billy conducts the production by Otto Schenk.

Performance dates: Dec. 31, 2021 – Jan. 5, 2022

Benjamin Bernheim, Nicole Car, Clemens Unterreiner, Étienne Dupuis, Vera-Lotte Boecker, and Slávka Zámečníková star in Franco Zeffirelli’s production of Puccini’s “La Bohème.” Eun Sun Kim conducts.

Performance dates: Jan. 2 – 16, 2022

Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” showcases Lawrence Brownlee, Vito Priante, Paolo Bordogna, Anna Goryachova, and Erwin Schrott. Gianluca Capuano conducts the production by Sven-Eric Bechtolf.

Massenet’s “Werther” stars Juan Diego Flórez, Étienne Dupuis, Julie Boulianne, and Slávka Zámečníková. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts the production by Andrei Serban.

Asmik Grigorian sings the title role in Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” with Brian Jagde as Chevalier René Des Grieux and Boris Pinkhasovich as Lescaut. Nicola Luisotti conducts the production by Robert Carsen.

Korngold’s “Die Tote Stadt” showcases Klaus Florian Vogt, Vida Miknevičiūtė, Adrian Eröd, and Monika Bohinec. Thomas Guggeis conducts the production by Willy Decker.

Diana Damrau performs the title role in Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena” alongside Erwin Schrott as Enrico VIII and Ekaterina Semenchuk who portrays Giovanna Seymour. The cast also includes Pene Pati and Virginie Verrez. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts the production by Eric Génovèse.

Richard Strauss’ “Salome” spotlights Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke, Claudia Mahnke, John Lundgren, Daniel Jenz, and Jennifer Holloway in the title role. Thomas Guggeis conducts the production by Boleslaw Barlog.

Mozart’s “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” features Christian Nickel, Lisette Oropesa, Regula Mühlemann, Goran Jurić, Daniel Behle, and Michael Laurenz. Antonello Manacorda conducts the production by Hans Neuenfels.

Verdi’s “Rigoletto” stars Francesco Demuro as Duca di Mantua, Vera-Lotte Boecker as Gilda, Evgeny Solodovnikov as Sparafucile, Monika Bohinec as Maddalena, and Ludovic Tézier in the title role. Marco Armiliato conducts the production by Pierre Audi.

La Cenerentola” gets another special performance with Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco guest orchestra. Cecilia Bartoli, Edgardo Rocha, Nicola Alaimo, Carlos Chausson, José Coca Loza, Rebeca Olvera, and Rosa Bove star. Gianluca Capuano conducts the production by Claudia Blersch.

Il Turco in Italia” features Ildar Abdrazakov, Cecilia Bartoli, Nicola Alaimo, Barry Banks, Giovanni Romeo, Maria José Lo Monaco, and David Astorga. Gianluca Capuano conducts Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco in the production by Jean-Louis Grinda.

Ring Cycle

Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” will be performed this season, featuring some of the greatest Wagnerian singers. Axel Kober conducts the production by Sven-Eric Bechtolf.

Das Rheingold” will spotlight John Lundgren as Wotan, Daniel Behle, Szilvia Vörös, Regine Hangler, Noa Beinart, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Jörg Schneider, Artyom Wasnetsov, and Dmitry Belosselskiy.

Performance Date: May 4-21, 2022

Die Walküre” stars Stuart Skelton as Siegmund, John Lundgren as Wotan, Lise Davidsen as Sieglinde, and Nina Stemme as Brünnhilde. The cast also includes Dmitry Belosselskiy and Szilvia Vörös.

Performance Date: May 8-22, 2022

Siegfried” showcases Nina Stemme, John Lundgren, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Noa Beinart, Jörg Schneider, Dmitry Belosselskiy, and Michael Weinius in the title role.

Performance Date: May 14-26, 2022

Finally, “Götterdämmerung” stars Michael Weinius, Clemens Unterreiner, Dmitry Belosselskiy, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Nina Stemme, Regine Hangler, and Szilvia Vörös.

Concerts
