The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma has named Michele Mariotti the company’s new music director.

Mariotti will assume the new position in November 2022 with an initial four-year contract. He will also conduct three operas per season.

Mariotti has performed in Roma in successful productions of “Idomeneo re di Creta di Mozart” in November, symphonic concerts, and “Luisa Miller.”

In a statement, Mariotti said, “I want to thank the President of the Foundation of Rome and superintendent Carlo Fuortes for the confidence in naming me, Music director.”

Mariotti also noted that he also wanted to open up the repertoire and explore pieces that reflect our current society like “Dialogues des Carmélites” by Poulenc, Puccini’s “Suor Angelica,” “Bluebeard’s Castle,” Ravel’s “l’Heure espagnole,” and Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi.”

The company’s current Music Director Daniele Gatti will end his tenure on Dec, 31, 2021.
