Gabriela Scherer, Michael Volle & Sooyeon Lee Lead Theater Dortmund’s 2021-22 Season

The Oper Dortmund has announced its 2021-22 season. Here is a look at the opera and the vocal performances of the season.

Premieres

Gabriela Scherer and Stéphanie Müther share the title role in Puccini‘s “Tosca.” James Lee performs Mario Cavaradossi, and Michael Volle and Mandla Mndebele alternate as Scarpia. Gabriel Feltz conducts a production by Nikolaus Habjan.

Premiere Date: Sept. 11, 2021

Bernhard Lang’s opera “Der Hetzer” spotlights Mandla Mndebele, David DQ Lee, Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, Hyona Kim, Fritz Steinbacher, Morgan Moody, and Denis Velev. Philipp Armbruster and Christoph JK Müller conduct a production by Kai Anne Schuhmacher.

Premiere Date: Sep. 26, 2021

Baroque pastische “Sehnsucht” will feature music by Georg Friedrich Händel, Claudio Monteverdi, Nicola Antonio Porpora, Henry Purcell, and will star soprano Sooyeon Lee, mezzo-soprano Hyona Kim, male soprano Bruno de Sá, countertenors Etienne Walch and David DQ Lee, and bass Denis Velev. Philipp Armbruster conducts a production by Andreas Rosar.

Premiere Date: Oct. 8, 2021

Berlin Skandalös” showcases Jörn-Felix Alt, Angelika Milster, Bettina Mönch, Rob Pelzer, Tom Zahner, David Jakobs, Alexander Klaws, Mark Seibert, and Anton Zetterholm. Christoph JK Müller conducts a production by Gil Mehmert.

Performance Dates: Oct. 22, 2021 – April 18, 2022

Ernest Guiraud and Camille Saint-Saëns’ opera “Frédégonde” stars Anna Sohn, Sergey Romanovsky, Mandla Mndebele, Sungho Kim, Denis Velev, Demian Matushevskyi, Ian Sidden, and Hyona Kim in the title role. Motonori Kobayashi conducts a production by Marie-Eve Signeyrole.

Premiere Date: Nov. 20, 2021

Victor Léon and Leo Stein’s operetta “Die lustige Witwe” stars Irina Simmes as Hanna Glawari, Matthias Störmer as Count Danilo Danilowitsch, and Hannes Brock as Baron Mirko Zeta. Sooyeon Lee, Sungho Kim, Steffen Schortie Scheumann, Fritz Steinbacher, and Morgan Moody round out the cast. Philipp Armbruster conducts a production by Thomas Enzinger.

Premiere Date: Jan. 22, 2022

Avner Dorman’s opera “Die Kinder des Sultans” features Sooyeon Lee, Fritz Steinbacher, Hyona Kim, Morgan Moody, Denis Velev, Natascha Valentin, and Youngbin Park. Christoph JK Müller conducts a production by Anna Drescher.

Premiere Date: March 6, 2022

Mirko Roschkowski stars in the title role in Eva-Maria Höckmayr’s production of Gaspare Spontini’s opera “Fernand Cortez.” The cast also includes Irina Simmes, Sungho Kim, Mandla Mndebele, Sangho Lee, Morgan Moody, Denis Velev, Jorge Carlo Moreno, Ian Sidden, Błażej Grek, and Jeayoun Kim. Motonori Kobayashi conducts.

Premiere Date: April 7, 2022

Wagner‘s “Die Walküre” spotlights Noel Bouley as Wotan, Astrid Kessler as Sieglinde, Daniel Frank as Siegmund, and Stéphanie Müther as Brünnhilde. The cast will be rounded out by Hyona Kim, Denis Velev, Irina Simmes, Christine Groeneveld, Natascha Valentin, Maria Hiefinger, Sooyeon Lee, Maya Lahyani, and Edvina Valjevcic. Gabriel Feltz conducts a production by Peter Konwitschny.

Thierry Tidrow and Ilaria Lanzino’s “Kirsas Musik” features Marcelo de Souza Felix, Ruth Katharina Peeck, and Anna Lucia Struck.

Revival Date: Sep. 5, 2021

Thierry Tidrow’s “Persona” showcases Marcelo de Souza Felix, Ruth Katharina Peeck, and Anna Lucia Struck. Christoph JK Müller and Satomi Nishi conduct a production by Zsófia Geréb.

Premiere Date: Sep. 16, 2021

Jacques Offenbach‘s “Orpheus in der Unterwelt” stars Lilli Schnabel, Felix Kriewald, Lennart Pannek, Lina Förster, Eteeyen Ita, Celina Sedlatschek, Thomas Holznienkemper, Christopher Brotzki, Johanna Töpfer, Massimo Buonerba, Sarah Heckner, Clara Karacic, and Maximilian Berns. Christoph JK Müller conducts a production by Alexander Becker.
