Wiener Staatsoper to Auction Off Iconic Costumes

The Wiener Staatsoper has decided to auction off costumes from its past productions in order to fund its young artist project.

The company will auction off its items on June 29, 2021 through Dorotheum auction house. The costumes come from such productions as “Lucia di Lammermoor,” “Roberto Devereux,” “Rigoletto,” “Elektra,” “Madama Butterfly,” and “Carmen,” among others. The costumes which were designed and made by hand at the company’s costume shop span 70 years and are values from 100€ to 1.500€.

Some of the costumes were worn by chorus members while others were worn by iconic performers such as  Anna Netrebko, Leontyne Price, Plácido Domingo, Diana Damrau, Piotr Beczala, Renata Scotto, Celso Albelo, Roberto Alagna, Sena Jurinac, and Joseph Carreras.

One of the most iconic costumes being auctioned is Edita Gruberova’s Elisabetta gown from a production of “Roberto Devereux.”
