The Royal Opera Announces 2021-22 Jette Parker Young Artists

By Logan Martell

In September, The Royal Opera’s Jette Parker Young Artists Programme will mark its 20th anniversary year. Since its founding, the program has trained and supported 137 young singers, directors, conductors, and pianists worldwide in aspects of opera, music, and theatre production.

In celebration of this milestone, the company has announced the artists who will make up the 2021-22 roster. Former Link Artists include soprano April Koyejo-Audiger, tenors Thando Mjandana and Alan Pingarron, and baritone Chuma Sijeqa. They will join Young Artists such as soprano Alexandra Lowe, mezzos Kseniia Niklaieva and Stephanie Wake-Edwards, tenors Andres Presno and Egor Zhuravskii, bass Blaise Malaba, stage director Isabelle Kettle, opera repetiteur Michael Sikich, conductor and repetiteur Michael Papadopoulos, and ballet conductor Edo Frenkel. Collectively they will form the JPYAP 20th Anniversary Company.

The company will showcase the artists in their October “Meet the Young Artists Week,” which will feature arias, ensembles, piano music, and song and close with a special alumni birthday recital curated by program founder and director David Gowland. Their “Recitals at Lunch” series will return in September and run through the end of summer.

The anniversary company will be joined by 28 returning JYPA alumni for roles in both the Linbury and Mainstage. Among the performances will be a mixed program of Stravinsky’s rarely-heard “Mavra,” along with Schoenberg’s 1912 melodrama “Pierrot Lunaire.”

The year’s program will culminate on July 23, 2022, for a special Mainstage concert marking the achievements of the program and artists over the last 20 years, and will be conducted by ROH Music Director Antonio Pappano.

Applications for the 2022-23 program will open on July 1, 2021 for singers, with conductors and repetiteur applications opening on Feb. 14, 2022.
