Sondra Radvanovsky Makes Teatro Real de Madrid History

By Mauricio Villa

Sondra Radvanovsky made history at the Teatro Real de Madrid on July 4, 2021 when she sang an encore of the iconic “Vissi d’arte” in Puccini’s “Tosca.”

This moment made the American-Canadian soprano the first female singer to give an encore at the opening night of an opera at the Teatro Real in Spain’s capital.

The performance includes performances by Joseph Calleja and Carlos Álvarez with members of the government present.

After singing the famed aria, the audience went wild, bringing the soprano to tears as she exchanged looks with conductor Nicola Luisotti. The Italian maestro then gave her the greenlight to repeat the iconic showpiece. Radvanosky, who was overcome by emotion, managed the challenging piece with the same level of precision as the first go-round, creating a magical moment.
