Grange Park Opera, Surrey has announced its 2022 season, which will feature operas by Janáček, Ponchielli, Verdi, and Wagner. Several of opera’s biggest stars, including Bryn Terfel, Simon Keenlyside, and Joseph Calleja, are slated to perform opera at its most grand.

Here’s what is in store for audiences when the season kicks off in June 2022.

First up is Janáček’s comedic stab at the bourgeoisie, “The Excursions of Mr. Broucek,” directed by David Pountney. The opera, last performed in the U.K. in 2009, follows workaday Mr. Broucek, who, tired of his mundane life, flees to the moon. Finding the moon-people rather pretentious and precious, he takes off, traveling back in time to 15th century Prague. There, he meets his demise, stuffed into a beer barrel after being condemned for cowardice.

Performance Dates: June 9-July 7, 2022

GPO welcomes back tenor Joseph Calleja as the treacherous lover in Ponchielli’s “La Gioconda.” Starring alongside Calleja in this tear-jerking grand opera awash in love, betrayal, and tragedy is South African soprano Amanda Echalaz, bass-baritone Alexander Krasnov, Ruxandra Donose, and Elizabetta Fiorillo.

Performance Dates: June 11-July 13, 2022

GPO’s production of  Verdi’s “Otello,” will star Welsh tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones and soprano Elizabeth Llewellyn, both making their role debuts as Otello and Desdemona, respectively. Simon Keenlyside explores his dark side as he takes on the bad guy role of Iago, Otello’s sidekick, who drives the general to utter paranoia. David Alden, the winner of the prestigious South Bank Show Award (for his production of Britten’s “Peter Grimes”) and two Olivier Awards, will direct the production.

Performance Dates: June 19-July 9, 2022

In this free staging of Wagner’s supernatural love story, “Die Fliegende Holländer,” none other than bass-baritone Bryn Terfel will play the Dutchman, Wagner’s ghostly sea captain, who seeks eternal love to free him from his curse. Joining Terfel on stage will be soprano Rachel Nicholls as Senta, and tenor Nicky Spence as Senta’s fiancée, Erik. Esteemed Wagnerian conductor Anthony Negus will be on the podium.
