Season Preview: Your guide to the arts in 2023

Pinchgut Opera has announced its 2023 season, with two “fairy-tale masterpieces”  – the Australian premiere of a work by Legrenzi and a Handel gem – alongside two adventurous concerts, featuring works from Buxtehude and Pinchgut favourite Charpentier.

Announcing the season, Artistic Director Erin Helyard said: “2023 sees Pinchgut continue its tradition of rediscovering and reimagining neglected operatic works with Legrenzi’s Giustino and we also include masterpieces by Handel and Buxtehude. I’m particularly thrilled to be presenting a theatrical representation of two ‘tiny operas’ – little jewels, really – by Charpentier, originally designed for the private entertainment in the apartments of Louis XIV. It is a wonderful and truly exciting season, filled with superb music, we can’t wait to share with our audiences.”

The season’s first production is the Australian premiere of Giustino by Giovanni Legrenzi, an important opera composer in Venice in the 1670s. This is the fourth international performance since the revival of the opera in 2007. Director Dean Bryant
