Austrian mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager is leaving the opera stage.

The mezzo-soprano announced the news in a podcast with the Zürich Opera in which she said that “Sweeney Todd” would be her last staged work.

Kirchschlager is recognized as one of the foremost interpreters of Richard Strauss and Mozart and has performed such operas as “Pelléas et Mélisande,” “Sophie’s Choice” and Britten’s “The Rape of Lucretia.” She has also performed works by Bach, Berlioz, Brahms, Debussy, Dvořák, Korngold, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Ravel, Rossini, Schubert, Schumann, Weill, and Wolf.

Kirchschlager was named Kammersängerin for her outstanding contributions to the Vienna State Opera and is an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music in London.

“Sweeney Todd” is set to run until Jan. 13, 2024.
